This week, Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-03) submitted nine veterans’ oral histories to the Library of Congress for preservation as part of the Veterans History Project (VHP) of the American Folklife Center.
“I am pleased to see the stories of so many veterans be preserved so that future generations can hear first-hand accounts of the service, bravery and sacrifice these veterans displayed while serving our country,” said Rep. Axne. “I am thankful for all of our veterans, and for the students at Drake University who helped tell each of their stories.”
Drake University journalism students collected the oral histories as part of a class project and submitted them to Rep. Axne’s office for inclusion in the Veterans History Project collection.
The stories and memories collected include those told by Urbandale Air Force veteran Melita Roseboom, who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, West Des Moines Army veteran Jordan Roubion who served in the Global War on Terror, Grimes Army veteran Laura Snyder who served in the Iraq War, and more.
With more than 100,000 stories from veterans, the Veterans History Project collection includes the largest oral history archive in the U.S. The VHP includes firsthand audio- and video-recorded oral histories of United States military veterans from World War I through the present. The collection also accepts memoirs, collections of original photographs, letters, diaries, maps and other historical documents from veterans.
