Today, Congresswoman Cindy Axne (IA03) announced that Ella Rivas, a junior at Saydel High School in Des Moines, is the winner of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition for Iowa’s Third Congressional District. Ella’s drawing will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

Addisyn Marvin, a freshman at Bondurant-Farrar High School, took home second place overall with her work, “Dollhouse,” and Addison Mitchell, a junior at Glenwood High School, took home third place overall with her piece, “Mom’s Dress Up.”

A panel of five artists and art professionals from across Iowa’s Third Congressional District assisted in choosing the winner, including:

  • State Representative Ray Sorensen, Sorensen Studios in Greenfield
  • Jorge Colorado, Artist in Malvern
  • Trish Bergren, Director of the Clarinda Carnegie Art Museum in Clarinda
  • Siobhan Spain, Director of Mainframe Studios in Des Moines
  • Mike Kunzler, Director of Kunzler Studios in West Des Moines
“Ella’s piece challenges the way trash is traditionally valued. Using only colored pencil over several weeks’ time, Ella injected vividness into her piece and brought it to life,” said Rep. Axne. “I want to congratulate Ella, Addisyn, and Addison for their outstanding work and applaud the dozens of students who participated in this year’s competition.”
