Washington, DC –– Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement on the raid in Northwest Syria that resulted in the death of the global leader of the Islamic State, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi:

"On Thursday, US Military forces conducted a strike in northern Syria to eliminate Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, dealing a decisive blow to the Islamic State and their efforts to reclaim territory in the region. Al-Qurayshi has a long and violent history of terrorism, joining Al-Qaeda during the war in Iraq before leaving the terrorist group to join the Islamic State. As a leading figure in ISIS, al-Qurayshi was responsible for genocidal mass killings, aggressive attacks on Mosul, and leading the resurgence of ISIS in Syria after the end of the so-called Caliphate.

Reports from the White Helmets indicate that as many as 10 women and children died when al-Qurayshi detonated a bomb, in a tragic last act of cowardice from the terrorist leader.

I am proud of the bravery and skill of our forces in conducting this raid. I am monitoring the situation in Syria, and I will continue my work on the House Armed Services Committee to ensure our military has the resources it needs to conduct successful counter-ISIS missions."
