Washington, D.C.- Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) released the following statement after voting for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act:
"Over the last year, our nation has engaged in many difficult but long-overdue conversations dealing with race and injustice in this country," said Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01). "As every American should be, I remain shocked at the murder of George Floyd as well as the killing of other Black Americans by law enforcement officers. Now is not a time to turn away from hard conversations and tough truths. Now is the time for us to make progress, right the wrongs of the past, and create a safer and more just society for all."
"The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act strengthens training, curtails excessive use of force, and increases accountability for bad actors. We're not immune from these problems here in New Hampshire, but I'm proud that our state is already taking action on many of the priorities proposed in this bill. In the last year, I have held regular conversations with both the law enforcement community and those individuals advocating for reform. I believe we can bring people together and offer solutions that acknowledge our shared humanity and address the issues that we face."
"We must do everything we can to ensure that no American, regardless of the color of their skin, lives in fear of those in the public trust. And we must also ensure that those who swear to protect and serve their communities always strive toward the highest standards of their profession. That is why I voted for this legislation and support other efforts to achieve racial justice and address systemic racism. It is why I have introduced legislation to provide funding for smaller police departments to adopt best practices and attain accreditation. It is also why I have pushed for direct, flexible funding to local governments to ensure that police, fire, and other critical services can do their jobs responsibly and effectively."
"I remain committed to listening to and raising up the voices of those who historically have not been heard. We must stand together against systemic racism, bias, and injustice wherever it exists and seek to work together and create constructive change to better the country that we all love. I hope the Senate will come to the table and support meaningful reforms that will move our country forward."
