Chris Pappas for Congress: Pappas Votes to Pass Bipartisan, Common Sense Gun Safety Reform

New Hampshire

Today Congressman Chris Pappas voted to pass the bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021. This common-sense legislation closes loopholes within the existing background check system that exempts individuals purchasing a gun from an unlicensed gun seller from the background check process.

"Gun violence claims lives everyday in our country, but we are not powerless in our ability to save lives and keep our communities safe," said Congressman Chris Pappas. "It is long past the time to close loopholes that allow too many weapons to get into the wrong hands by enacting universal background checks. I strongly support this bipartisan bill and other common sense steps that respect the rights of responsible gun owners and will allow us to address this ongoing tragedy."

Universal background checks have been widely supported by Americans, including more than 90 percent of gun-owning households. 16 states also already have laws in place requiring background checks for all gun sales.

H.R. 8 has been endorsed by many including Giffords, Everytown for Gun Safety, Brady, United States Conference of Mayors, Major Cities Chiefs Association, Association of Prosecuting Attorneys, Hispanic American Police Commanders Association, VoteVets, Third Way, American Medical Association, American Public Health Association, American College of Physicians, American Nurses Association, Catholic Health Association of the United States, National Education Association, American Federation of Teachers, National PTA, NAACP, League of Women Voters, and MomsRising.
