Today, the People for Patty Murray Campaign released a new TV ad, Real Champion, which features Spokane area seniors speaking direct-to-camera about Senator Patty Murray’s work to secure lower prescription drug costs and protect Social Security and Medicare — and how Murray’s opponent, MAGA Republican Tiffany Smiley, sided with Mitch McConnell and Big Pharma to oppose legislation to lower prescription drug and health care costs.
“Washington seniors have a real champion in Patty Murray,” seniors from the Spokane area say in the direct-to-camera spot. “Patty took on Congress and passed legislation to lower the cost of prescription drugs, capped insulin for seniors at 35 dollars a month, saving us thousands a year. Tiffany Smiley sided with Mitch McConnell and the drug companies to oppose the bill. Shows whose side she’s on. Patty will always protect Social Security and Medicare, too. We can count on Patty Murray to keep fighting for us.”
As Chair of the Senate Health Committee, Senator Murray helped lead Senate Democrats in drafting the prescription drug and health care tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act and American Rescue Plan. Overwhelming majorities of Americans support allowing the federal government to negotiate prescription drug costs, and eight in ten U.S. adults (83%) say the cost of prescription drugs is “unreasonable.” Last week, Senator Murray joined health care advocates on a press call to discuss her work to secure lower prescription drug costs.
Senator Murray’s opponent, MAGA Republican Tiffany Smiley, has strongly opposed the recently-passed Inflation Reduction Act, which allows Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug costs, bringing down costs for patients and generating enormous savings for taxpayers. The Inflation Reduction Act will also cap Medicare beneficiaries’ out-of-pocket prescription drugs costs at $2,000 a year, cap their insulin costs at $35 a month, and cap price increases on their prescriptions at the rate of inflation so that drug makers cannot jack up prices to juice their own profits — helping the more than 1.4 million Medicare recipients in Washington state save money on their prescriptions.
The Inflation Reduction Act will also extend — for three full years — the health care tax credits Senator Murray championed in the American Rescue Plan, which have saved millions of Americans thousands of dollars on health care, spurred record enrollment on the health exchanges, and helped bring our nation’s uninsured rate to an all-time low. In Washington, thanks to the tax credits, more than 60,000 new people signed up for health care coverage last year, two in five found coverage for less than $100 a month, and 40,000 Washingtonians were eligible for coverage that cost less than $10 a month.
Tiffany Smiley has touted the support and funding she has received from U.S. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL), chair of the National Senate Republican Campaign Committee, who authored a campaign agenda that could eliminate Medicare and Social Security. Smiley has promised her donors they can count on her to “always be a rock-solid conservative vote.”
