Ron Johnson’s History of Supporting Judges with Out of Touch Views on Abortion, Contraception

Wisconsin

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

A new report details Ron Johnson’s long history of confirming judges that are staunchly opposed to reproductive freedom, including abortion and contraception access. Like Johnson, these judges are completely out of touch with the views of Wisconsinites, 63% of whom oppose the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

In the Senate, Ron Johnson co-sponsored a personhood bill that would ban all abortions without exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother. He co-sponsored a federal abortion ban in the Senate eight different times.

Now that he’s in an election year, Ron Johnson is hiding from his record of supporting abortion bans with almost no exceptions. Will he hide from the anti-abortion judges he’s voted to confirm?

Does Ron Johnson Denounce the Anti-Abortion and Anti-Contraception Judges He Voted to Confirm?

U.S. District Court Judge Brian Buescher: “When regulating abortion, my view is this: we should regulate abortion as much as we possibly can. I’m in favor of banning abortion.”

U.S. Circuit Judge Andrew Brasher: Judge Brasher defended an Alabama law that would have put young women on trial for seeking abortion care. The legislation allowed a judge to appoint an attorney for a fetus and allowed witnesses to be called forward to testify against the woman’s maturity.

U.S. District Court Judge Wendy Vitter: “[Texas is] taking it to the Supreme Court, but they are making great strides in making it very difficult to get abortions in Texas. And we’re gonna be right there, because our lobbying efforts in the Louisiana legislature are always, you know, right up front.”

Judge Vitter promoted the idea that contraceptives cause cancer and Planned Parenthood kills over 150,000 women a year.

U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Clark: Judge Clark filed a brief on behalf of anti-abortion organizations disputing the ACA’s contraception coverage policy, claiming the contraception caused cancers in women.

Before his confirmation, Judge Clark signed his name onto a newsletter calling Planned Parenthood ‘the nation’s #1 institution for killing innocent life’.

U.S. District Court Judge Brantley Starr: “The prohibition of this brutal, gruesome, and inhumane procedure promotes respect for the dignity of the life of the unborn.”

Judge Starr previously testified before the Texas House of Representatives in favor of restricting access to reproductive care by imposing medically unnecessary requirements on abortion care providers.

U.S. District Court Judge Michael Liburdi: Active in the Federalist Society which has called abortion “an act of force” and “a threat to human life.”
