Johnson’s refusal to support the Respect for Marriage Act comes as no surprise after a new report details the numerous anti-LGBTQ+ judges he has voted to confirm. Both Johnson and his judges hold views that are out of touch with Wisconsinites.
Does Ron Johnson Still Support the Anti-LGBTQ+ Judges He Helped Confirm?
U.S. Circuit Judge Kenneth Lee: “A scientific explanation exists for the higher incidence of AIDS in the gay community. Homosexuals are more promiscuous than heterosexuals, and thus their risk factor increases exponentially.”
U.S. District Court Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk: Judge Kacsmaryk said adding protections for the LGBTQ+ community in the Violence Against Women Act was “a grave mistake.”because including the community suggested that discrimination based on sexuality and gender identity should be taken as seriously as other forms of discrimination.
U.S. District Court Judge Howard Neilson: Neilson argued, in an amicus brief rejected by the Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges, that denying same-sex couples the status of marriage rested on biology and thus did not demean or stigmatize their relationships.
Judge Neilson defended California’s Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriage. In court, he claimed that sexual orientation was a choice and disputed the evidence that discrimination of members of the LGBTQ+ community led to higher depression and mental health concerns.
U.S. District Court Judge Allen Winsor: Winsor argued in a brief against same-sex marriage in Florida that heterosexual marriage is more likely to result in “stable and enduring family units” than same-sex marriage.
U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Clark: “If you’re thinking of going to law school and thinking of practicing law, think about what would you do if you are asked to work on a brief filed in the U.S. Supreme Court in support of same-sex marriage…So what would you do if you were asked to work on that, or nowadays one of the next evolutions of same-sex marriage is polygamy. What would you do if you were asked to work on a brief in support of polygamy?”
