Parsippany, NJ -- Today, Representative Mikie Sherrill released the following statement on the historic and deadly levels of rainfall and flooding that resulted from the remnants of Hurricane Ida:
"Today, our communities are beginning to assess the damage from last night's devastating and deadly flooding across the entire region and diligently working on rescue and recovery efforts.
"Amid reports of a number of people in the NJ-11 area who are currently missing, my heart is with them, their families, and the entire community as those search and rescue efforts continue.
"Our communities are far too familiar with devastating floods. An event of this magnitude impacts all of us and shows exactly why we need to be making investments in flood resilience, not just in flood recovery. The status quo is clearly untenable, as we are forced to confront the dangerous realities of the climate crisis.
"As we have too often done, our communities will pull together to handle the immediate impact and will work arm-in-arm to find ways to ensure we improve our resilience going forward. I urge New Jerseyans to continue to follow the directives of state and local officials, follow OEM's guidance on state safety, and utilize the NJOEM resources available.
"I am working with federal partners, partnering with the New Jersey Congressional delegation to support Governor Phil Murphy's request for a federal disaster declaration, coordinating with mayors and local officials in communities impacted throughout NJ-11, and will continue to assist state and local officials in every way possible."
