House Passes Emergency Funding to Reimburse the Capitol Police and National Guard for Security Measures After January 6 Attacks, Expand the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa program

Washington, DC–– Today, Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) voted for emergency supplemental funding to reimburse the United States Capitol Police and the National Guard for expenses incurred protecting the Capitol after the insurrection on January 6th and to expand and streamline the Afghan SIV program.

"We owe a debt of gratitude to the brave men and women of the Capitol Police and the National Guard who, after the attacks of January 6th, stood guard and kept us safe while Congress conducted the people's business," said Rep. Sherrill. "Likewise, as the U.S. completes our withdrawal from Afghanistan, it is imperative that we keep our promises to the Afghan interpreters, translators, and other partners who put their lives on the line to assist with our shared mission. Earlier this month, the House of Representatives passed two bipartisan bills to expand and streamline the Afghan SIV program and this funding will help ensure that the program is able to meet the demand. Passing this emergency supplemental was crucial for Capitol Police, the National Guard, and those Afghans who were crucial aides to U.S. soldiers abroad. Now it's time to get it signed into law."

The Emergency Supplemental package includes funding for the Departments of State, Defense, and Health and Human Services to resettle and assist Afghan SIV recipients. Additionally, the package reimburses the National Guard and the USCP for security measures after January 6th and funds security upgrades for the U.S. Capitol Complex.

Rep. Sherrill is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served as Navy helicopter pilot for almost 10 years. She now serves on the House Armed Services Committee.
