House Passes FY2022 Appropriations Package Funding State Department, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs

Washington, DC–– Today, Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) voted for Fiscal Year 2022's State Department, Foreign Operations and related programs Appropriations Package. In addition to the inclusion of support for the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program and two Sherrill-backed amendments, this bill funds investments in crucial priorities such as addressing the climate crisis, tackling global health challenges, bolstering humanitarian assistance, and helping prevent future pandemics.

"The past year has reaffirmed that our engagement around the world, our shifting security priorities, and our ability to support global health infrastructure are more crucial than ever," said Rep. Sherrill. "This appropriations package helps ensure that the United States remains a global leader and we continue to follow through on our promises around the globe. Funding for the Afghan SIV Program, expansion of our pandemic preparedness efforts, and the inclusion of my amendments to bolster democracy around the globe are all measures that ensure this appropriations package is a testament to our commitment to confront the evolving diplomatic challenges ahead."

Rep. Sherrill introduced two amendments to the package. The first would specifically direct the State Department to support democratic processes and peaceful transitions of power internationally. The second supports efforts with our allies to establish clear international norms on cyber activities that prioritize human rights, individual privacy, and consumer protections.

In addition to Rep. Sherrill's amendments and a number of other key priorities, this appropriations package includes the following provisions Rep. Sherrill advocated for:

$160 million for global nutrition programs

$950 million for international basic education programs

Robust support for the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa program, building on Rep. Sherrill's co-sponsorship of both the HOPE for Afghan SIVs Act and the ALLIES Act.

Federal support for the multilateral Fund for Global Health Security and Pandemic Preparedness

Repealing the global gag rule, which undermined international women's health programs

Countering Russia's malign international activities by providing robust support to our allies

Providing increased funding for the Peace Corps

Responding to the challenges of the global pandemic with increased aid and assistance
