Washington, DC -- Today, Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement on the release of the Independent Review Commission on Sexual Assault in the Military and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin's implementation guidance:
"The culture of sexual assault and harassment has been a shameful cloud over our military for far too long. It has impacted countless service men and women who've experienced this violence and have not felt like they had anywhere to turn to for help. Unfortunately, the system has benefited the perpetrators, not the victims.
"This week, the Independent Review Commission and Secretary Austin took a monumental step in addressing this problem. I applaud their support for taking these cases out of the chain of military command, a step I have long supported. I look forward to seeing the Department of Defense implement the commission's recommendations to ensure that our military is doing right by the men and women who serve."
