Washington, DC––Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) announced today that 23 students from New Jersey's 11th Congressional District were appointed and accepted offers to the U.S. service academies.

Rep. Sherrill hosted a virtual reception to honor the students who will be attending the US Naval Academy, the US Military Academy, the US Air Force Academy, and the US Merchant Marine Academy. Nineteen of the appointees from NJ-11 were nominated by Representative Sherrill and four by other nominating sources, including Senator Menendez and Senator Booker. Notably, NJ-11 tied for the most appointees to West Point from any other congressional district in the nation, with 11 appointees.

Rep. Sherrill graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1994 and went on to serve as a Sea King helicopter pilot and Russian policy officer in the Navy for almost 10 years.

"Each year it is an honor to meet with the NJ-11 students appointed to the service academies," said Rep. Sherrill. "They remind me of myself at 18, excited to begin the next challenging and rewarding chapter of life and to begin their service to our country. This year's students should be given extra acknowledgement after completing part of 11th and most of 12th grade virtually, through unprecedented circumstances during the pandemic. Their achievements are a testament to their character that I am sure will serve them well throughout their service. I want to thank my Nomination Board for their help in selecting these students. I wish every student the best of luck in the fall."
