Washington, DC -- Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement praising the announcement of a bipartisan agreement between Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) and Ranking Member John Katko (R-NY) to create commission to investigate the January 6 attack on the Capitol:

"The news of this agreement is welcome and long overdue. I have been calling for a bipartisan commission to investigate the events of January 6th since they occurred. I am grateful to Chairman Thompson and Ranking Member Katko for their work to reach an agreement here, and I am hopeful the House and Senate will move quickly to pass this so President Biden can sign this into law. We need a full accounting of what occurred on January 6th and what led up to the insurrection. I am pleased to see that this agreement so closely mirrors the core elements of bipartisan legislation I co-authored with Rep. Speier. Without accountability and a meaningful reckoning with the domestic extremism that fueled the January 6th attack, we won't be able to move forward together as a nation. This commission will help achieve that and I look forward to working to ensure this quickly becomes law."
