Today, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) issued the following statement after voting no on the House’s FY2023 National Defense Authorization Act:
“President Joe Biden has prioritized providing a strong national defense while working toward Democrats’ longstanding goal of promoting responsible military spending. However, Republicans remain determined to bloat defense spending while underinvesting here at home. Today’s National Defense Authorization Act passed in the House with nearly $37 billion more than the President requested.
“Excessive defense spending prevents us from investing in the people we serve. It detracts resources from affordable housing, making childcare more accessible, bringing healthcare to everyone, and building the infrastructure of tomorrow. I voted no on H.R. 7900 because Congress still has an opportunity to pass a better final FY2023 NDAA that prioritizes global security while reining in excessive spending. As the House and Senate work out their differences on the final FY2023 NDAA, I urge negotiators to reach an agreement that more closely matches our Democratic vision.”
