Today, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) issued the following statement marking Black Maternal Health week:
Congresswoman Williams, Whip of the Democratic Women’s Caucus said:
“I’m a Black mom, so I’m more than all in to protect Black maternal health. I had blood pressure concerns during and after my pregnancy with my now six-year-old son, Carter. I was fortunate to have access to a high level of care, but every Black mom and mom-to-be should get that same care, too. A horrific number of Black women die from preventable complications related to pregnancy. Georgia is dead last in Black maternal mortality, with our statistics mirroring developing countries. That’s why I didn’t hesitate to sign on to the Black Maternal Health Momnibus and I continue to fight for Medicare for All. We need these two bills because a Black mom’s bank account and ZIP Code shouldn’t determine if she and her baby come home safely after childbirth.”
