Today, November 30th, 2021, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-02) joined a letter with over 60 members of Congress pushing House and Senate leadership to keep the bipartisan and bicameral Military Justice Improvement and Increasing Prevention Act (MJIIPA) in the final National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) language.
“The bipartisan legislation to prevent military sexual assault and reform the military justice system for the better should be included in the final NDAA. This bill is supported by an overwhelming bipartisan majority of the House and a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate,” said Miller-Meeks. “The military justice system has been broken for too long. We need to pass this legislation to fix this system; the time to act is now.”
Background:
In June, Miller-Meeks joined nine House members to introduce the bipartisan Vanessa Guillén Military Justice Improvement and Increasing Prevention Act. This legislation moves the decision to prosecute serious crimes in the military from the chain of command to independent, trained, and professional military prosecutors.
The bipartisan and bicameral letter is signed by 44 senators and 22 members of the House.
The House-introduced Vanessa Guillén MJIIPA is currently supported by 220 members. The Senate-introduced MJIIPA is currently supported by 66 members and was led by Senators Joni Ernst (R-IA), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Chuck Grassley (R-IA).
