Today, Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09) released the following statement following the Biden administration’s creation of a “Disinformation Governance Board” within the Department of Homeland Security.
“I am extremely concerned over Secretary Mayorkas’ announcement of the Biden Administration’s plan to establish a Disinformation Governance Board within the Department of Homeland Security. Every American has the right to free speech as protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. A government entity that polices the statements of its citizens is anti-American, the stuff of Orwellian fantasy, and unlike anything I would expect to see in this country.
Furthermore, I am deeply troubled by the selection of Ms. Nina Jankowicz to lead the board, which signals the Administration’s intent to use the body to censor politically dissenting viewpoints. Not only does she have a poor record of identifying stories like the Hunter Biden laptop as misinformation, she has a history of engaging in leftist activism and partisan attacks. Within just the last two years, she has characterized America as systemically racist, compared President Trump to the “leaders of authoritarian countries”, and related him to “homegrown fascism”. The irony of these statements is not lost on me, given the repeated examples of authoritarian dictatorships controlling their people with agencies similar to the one Ms. Jankowicz has been chosen to head.
The Federal Government is constitutionally bound to protect the rights of its people, not to suppress them. I strongly urge the Biden administration to withdraw this initiative and will support any legislative proposal to oppose its creation.”
