Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. released the following statement today regarding the decision to grant temporary protected status to Haitians who live in the United States. It allows Haitians who qualify for the status to receive protections from deportation for the next 18 months. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas announced the declaration due to Haiti’s continued social and political unrest.
“America has always been a land of freedom from oppression and political violence for people around the world,” said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. “I am glad the Biden Administration recognizes the dangers that Haitians in America face if they were forced to return to their native country right now. President Biden has been a strong supporter of immigrants from his first day in office because he understands that immigrants founded this country and continue to make it stronger every day.”
