Today, March 15th, 2022, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-02) joined over 40 House Republicans in a letter, led by Rep. Vicky Hartzler (MO-04), urging the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to immediately rescind the rule mandating face masks on public transportation.

“The CDC needs to stop playing games and trust the science. There is no scientific reason for removing mask mandates in restaurants and indoor spaces while continuing to mandate masks on public transportation,” said Miller-Meeks. “Anyone who wishes to wear a mask should have the right to do so, but it should not be a federal mandate. It is time to end the mandates.”

Background:

On January 29th, 2021, the CDC issued an indefinite order requiring face masks to be worn while on public transportation, including planes, trains, ride-shares, and buses. On March 10th, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) followed a recommendation from the CDC and extended this order on all commercial forms of mass transit until April 18th.

On March 9th, Miller-Meeks sent a letter to the TSA requesting that it allow the mask mandate for air travel to expire, citing new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
