DENVER- Governor Jared Polis kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month in Colorado by sharing a statement expressing his appreciation for the contributions of Colorado Latinos.
“Colorado’s history is woven through with the remarkable accomplishments of our Hispanic and community. My administration is committed to building a Colorado for All, a state where everyone has an opportunity to succeed, and we can celebrate our shared values,” said Governor Jared Polis. “Our Hispanic community is helping Colorado build back better and I look forward to working with the community to continue to improve the lives of Hispanic families across our state.”
Colorado’s Hispanic population grew by approximately 225,000 people since 2010 according to a recent study. Approximately 1 in 5 Colorado residents identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino, including three members of Governor Polis’ cabinet. Governor Polis appointed Colorado’s first Latino Poet Laureate, Bobby LeFebre, launched the Office of New Americans, and appointed the first DACA recipient to a state board.
Hispanic Heritage Month begins in the middle of September to coincide with the national independence days of several Latin American countries: Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica on Sept. 15, followed by Mexico on Sept. 16, Chile on Sept. 18 and Belize on Sept. 21.
