Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. discussed the expanded Child Tax Credit with local parents today to educate them about it and make sure they would receive the payments next week. Rep. Payne, Jr. spoke to the parents after a discussion with their children about the importance of following your dreams and staying in school at an Athletes for a Better Community summer camp in Jersey City. Starting July 15, the expanded Child Tax Credit will provide eligible New Jersey families with payments of $250 to $300 per child every month until the end of 2021.
“The expanded Child Tax Credit is going to help families put food on the table and pay bills as we reopen and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Rep. Payne, Jr. “President Biden and Democrats in Congress made sure to include it in the American Rescue Plan to provide more aid to struggling families. This is an important benefit and I want all of my constituents to take advantage of it as soon as possible.”
The expanded Child Tax Credit is available to all New Jersey families with children under 17 years old that earn $150,000 or less for a two-parent household and $75,000 or less for a single-parent household. Families with children under six years old will receive $300 payments and families with children between six and 17 years old will receive $250 payments. The credit will benefit 84 percent of children in New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District and bring at least 12,000 local children out of poverty.
Qualified parents must file a tax return with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or sign up through the IRS Non-Filer Tool to become eligible for the payments. For more information, visit ChildTaxCredit.gov.
