I am outraged.
The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade is a disaster for women's rights and an offense against the right of every person to their own bodily autonomy.
In medical school, I witnessed the bleeding, infections, and deaths that went along with illegal abortions. I was in my surgery internship when Roe was decided, and women’s health care changed for the better. The world changed for the better, and all because the Supreme Court ruled that all American citizens have the right to decide what to do with their own bodies. Today's decision is an abomination. Activist judges have outnumbered their counterparts and ruled that a woman does not have a fundamental right to control her own body. They are returning us to the days of bleeding, infection, and death--and we are all worse for the change.
Make no mistake. As terrible as this decision is, things will grow worse. This decision lays the foundation for stripping away personal freedoms at the whim of activist judges who are not acting in the best interest, or with the will of the people. Their malicious judgment, based on flawed reasoning, threatens the right to contraception, in-vitro-fertilization, marriage, and every other issue of personal freedom Americans hold dear. This ruling allows the government to intrude on every personal aspect of my life, of your life.
The government has no place in our personal lives or impacting the decisions we make as part of those lives. Anti-choice, forced-pregnancy extremists like my opponent will never protect the rights of women. Send me to Congress, and I will fight for women’s rights. I will protect the rights of us all.
