Washington, D.C.Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. has been working diligently to get federal aid to New Jersey’s Tenth Congressional District after last week’s rain from Tropical Storm Ida flooded resident homes, businesses and streets throughout the area.

After Rep. Payne, Jr. toured flooded areas of the district last Friday, he spoke with officials at the White House and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) throughout the weekend to get government disaster funding and resources to the district.  The Congressman joined letters to support New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s disaster declaration request to President Biden and ask for emergency funding from Congress to help New Jersey recover from the storms.  After President Biden issued a disaster declaration that did not include Essex, Hudson or Union counties, Rep. Payne, Jr. began working with FEMA to include these three district counties in the disaster declaration.

“Last week, I met with residents to see the damage Tropical Storm Ida did to their homes personally,” said Rep. Payne, Jr.  “It is going to cost millions of dollars to clean and repair our communities.  I will not rest until I am assured that all our counties qualify for federal disaster relief to get the help they need.  I know my constituents were still recovering from losses due to COVID-19 before the flooding.  Now, they could lose homes and businesses permanently if we do not get federal aid to them immediately.”
