Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. voted today on legislation to extend the debt limit so the United States can pay its already incurred obligations and fund government operations until December 3, 2021.  The legislation raises the limit by $480 billion to protect the full faith and credit of the U.S. government.  Without it, the U.S. economy could lose six million jobs and $15 trillion in household wealth because it failed to meet financial obligations.

“We need this measure to avoid an economic disaster,” said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr.  “We have started to recover fully from the financial damage of the COVID-19 global pandemic.  We cannot afford to lose the jobs we have regained and future economic growth because of partisan bickering over such an important bill.  Americans need our support during this national health crisis.  We do not want to punish them with a possible government default.”
