Washington, D.C. — Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. voted today to censure Congressman Paul Gosar and remove him from his committee assignments in the U.S. House of Representatives for his use of violent images in social media posts. The Republican from Arizona’s 4th District made a video that depicted him attacking President Joe Biden and murdering Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14). Congressman Gosar was removed from his committee assignments after a bipartisan vote in the House.
“I voted to censure Congressman Gosar and remove him from his committees because violence has no place in politics,” said Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. “We must show the country that inappropriate actions like his video have consequences. His actions would not be tolerated in any workplace in the country and they should not be tolerated in Congress. There is a certain decorum to how Members of Congress treat each other that must be respected at all times. While we debate on the House floor as Democrats and Republicans, we must still respect each other as Americans.”
The vote on the House Resolution (H. Res. 789) to remove Congressman Gosar came after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy failed to reprimand him for the video. If Leader McCarthy had done so, it would have been a strong condemnation of his actions and shown his Republican House members that such portrayals of violence against Members of Congress will not be tolerated in the modern Republican party.
