Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. announced today that Bayonne would receive $1.5 million from the Department of Justice to hire 12 new police officers. The funding is provided through the Department’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program and it is part of an $11.7 million grant for New Jersey. Overall, COPS will award $139 million in funding to 183 community law enforcement agencies to hire 1,066 full-time law enforcement professionals.
“I am proud to help Bayonne get funds to hire more police officers to expand community policing initiatives, including crime prevention,” said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. “I would encourage all the law enforcement agencies in my district to apply for similar grants in the future.”
The COPS Hiring Program is a competitive award program intended to reduce crime and advance public safety through community policing with direct funding to hire career law enforcement officers. It provides funds directly to law enforcement agencies to hire new or rehire additional law enforcement officers in order to increase crime prevention efforts.
