Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr., Chairman of the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials for the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, issued the following statement today regarding the retirement of Rep. Peter DeFazio, Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
Chairman DeFazio, a Democrat who represents Oregon’s 4th Congressional District, will have served for 36 years in the U.S. House of Representatives when he retires after the current Congressional term. He was elected Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in 2019 and helped pass the recent, $1.2 trillion dollar Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, a new law that would improve roads, bridges and infrastructure nationwide.
“Chairman DeFazio’s outstanding leadership in the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has been an inspiration to all of us who serve on it. Thanks to his exceptional efforts, Americans will have better roads, stronger and safer bridges, and a modern rail system to use throughout the country. Chairman DeFazio has been a powerful champion of environmentally-friendly transportation, such as zero-carbon busing and electric automobiles.
As a staunch environmentalist, he has fought to protect nature and provide cleaner drinking water throughout his district. In addition, he worked to better the heath care of our nation’s military veterans. His dedication to public service, whether as a Member of Congress or a servicemember with the U.S. Air Force Reserve, is an example all of us could follow. His incredible leadership will be missed in our committee and Congress. I wish him the best in his life after Congress.”
