Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. voted today for a House Resolution to hold former Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows in contempt of Congress for his failure to comply with a Congressional subpoena.  Meadows rejected the subpoena to testify about his involvement, and former President Trump’s involvement, in the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol building and attempts to illegally overturn the results of the 2020 Presidential Election.  The insurrection killed five people, injured at least 140 law enforcement officials, and forced members of Congress and their staff to flee the Capitol.

“I voted to find Mr. Meadows in contempt because we need to understand who was responsible for the January 6th insurrection and hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr.  “Former President Trump’s Chief of Staff Mr. Meadows was involved in communications about Trump’s actions to try and illegally overturn President Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, the most ethical and fair election in U.S. history.  His refusal to acknowledge and respect a subpoena from Congress is another example of his disrespect for American democracy and the rule of law.”

The House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol issued the subpoena to learn what Meadows knew about the insurrection and other attempts by Trump to subvert American election laws.  The committee has stated that Meadows met with Georgia election officials to try and illegally “find” extra votes for Trump and declare him the winner of that state’s electoral votes.  In addition, the Select Committee wants to hear about Meadows’ understanding of Trump’s communications with federal officials to take illegal actions to stop the legal certification of electoral votes for President Biden’s victory.  If Meadows is found guilty of contempt of Congress, he could be punished with a fine up to $100,000 and one year in prison.
