Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. helped pass a bill today to restore the Postal Service to the previous standards of excellence for all New Jersey residents.

The bill, the Postal Service Reform Act of 2022 (H.R. 3076), eliminates the requirement that the Postal Service pre-fund retiree health benefits for all current and retired employees for 75 years in the future.  This move would save the Postal Service $27 billion over the next 10 years and allow it to put that money into improved services nationwide.  In addition, the bill would require the Postal Service to deliver mail and packages at least six days per week with weekly performance updates to promote increased on-time delivery.

“The Post Office must be protected at all costs,” said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr.  “The previous administration tried to limit effective mail service to create distrust in mail-in voting for the 2020 election.  But support for the Postal Service should never be a political issue.  Our Postal carriers and Post Office workers continue to get the job done despite these limitations.  This bill gives them the financial support and other tools they need to provide New Jersey residents the quality of service they expect from their local Post Office.”
