Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. issued the following statement today regarding Florida Senator Rick Scott’s tax plan. Senator Scott’s plan would increase the taxes of millions of American workers and families regardless of income or job status. The plan says nothing about increased taxes on the 55 U.S. companies on the Fortune 500 list that paid no income taxes during the last three years, including FedEx and Nike, according to a 2021 article in the New York Times. In addition, it fails to increase taxes on the wealthiest, one-percent of Americans, even though some of those Americans have advocated for higher taxes on their income.
"Senator Scott’s plan is a typical Republican initiative to rob the poor and give to the rich,” said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. “People in Essex, Hudson and Union counties are struggling right now. The last thing we need to do is take money out of their pockets with a cruel, unnecessary and offensive tax increase on working-class folks. As a resident of Newark’s South Ward, I see the challenges low and middle-income workers face every day trying to afford rent, food, medicine, and other basic necessities. This tax plan would make their lives more difficult and shows Senator Scott’s reckless disregard for the hardships of American families. I can promise my constituents one thing- I will never support a Republican tax increase on the American working class.”
