Today, U.S. Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) sent separate letters to the chief executive officers of Visa, Mastercard, and American Express to request information about the companies’ establishment of a new merchant category code for U.S. gun retailers.

In his letters, Rep. Burchett expressed concern these new policies would violate consumers’ privacy and could potentially lead to the creation of an unconstitutional firearm owner registry. He also requested the companies’ reasoning for establishing the new merchant category code.

"The right to keep and bear arms is enshrined in our Constitution. U.S. citizens are free to protect themselves, and the rights of law-abiding gun owners should not be infringed," wrote Rep. Burchett.
