State Representative Daniel P. Troy (D-Willowick) announced today that he has introduced a House Resolution, HR 35, that will create a temporary House Select Committee on Property Tax Education and Reform.
“One of the most complex and least understood public policy areas in Ohio is our local property tax system. Alterations, additions, redefinitions and challenging mathematics have certainly made it a very confusing and puzzling subject matter,” Representative Troy stated.
While Troy indicated that the property tax system is critical in providing much of the revenue that underwrites the costs of important public services, he and others believe that a significant comprehensive and educational review of the system is overdue.
The ten-member House Select Committee would be charged with learning and reviewing the history and purpose of all aspects of Ohio property tax law, including, but not limited to, the forms of levies, property classifications, reduction factors, types of millage, local subdivision property tax budgeting and any other issues or components deemed worthy of review and study.
“I am hopeful that the panel would, after this education and study process, be in a position to recommend to the Ohio House whatever changes they deem necessary to update and simplify property tax law to correspond to and address the realities of today,” Representative Troy concluded.
The resolution has been introduced with bi-partisan co-sponsorship. For further information, contact Rep. Troy at 614-466-7251 or email him at Rep60@ohiohouse.gov.
