Grassley: Holding Ukraine Aid Hostage To Pass Gov Funding Bill Is No Way To Govern

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), today denounced Democrats’ tactic to tie a bloated government funding package to must-pass Ukrainian aid package.

“Tonight, Democrat leaders in Congress held hostage critical support for Ukraine in order to pass another massive spending package. Our choice was to vote for increased federal spending or vote against supporting Ukraine in their urgent time of need. It was a despicable show of opportunism that is insulting to Americans and Ukrainians alike.

“I called on leaders in Congress to hold a standalone vote on the Ukraine aid package and cosponsored a bill to immediately deliver needed assistance to Ukraine without excessive federal spending. Unfortunately,  we were not allowed a vote on this bill.

“So we are in a no-win situation. While I support many provisions in the spending bill, I do not support its unnecessary price tag. But in the end, we can’t in good conscience turn our backs on the people of Ukraine as they face sustained and unprovoked attacks from a murderous Russian aggressor.

“Americans deserve better than the mismanagement and extortion being carried out by the majority party in Congress,” Grassley said.
