Margaret Schiller: Gun Safety

Florida

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

I am a firm believer that we must implement common-sense gun laws to stop the senseless violence that we are seeing in our schools and in our communities. So many lives have been needlessly taken, families disrupted, and communities shaken by the horrific acts of gunmen. It’s imperative that we restore the sense of security and safety that our communities took for granted for so long.

While the recent bipartisan legislation that passed was a step in the right direction, it was not enough. Additional common-sense gun laws have been proposed, but have failed to meet bipartisan support. These include raising age limits, strengthening background checks, banning high-capacity magazines, increasing penalties for gun trafficking, gun storage laws, and more–all of which I support.

I would also support a full ban on automatic weapons. If our military are required to check their automatic weapons when they are not using them on the battlefield, there is no reason that an average citizen should be armed with this type of weapon.

By supporting common-sense gun legislation, I am not suggesting that we “take away your guns.” I fully understand and  value the protection of the Second Amendment. Yet, common-sense gun laws will ensure that we are all safer in our everyday lives.
