Our families are struggling with the outrageous cost of childcare that often exceeds the price of college tuition. This financial burden stops women who wish to work from doing so and limits our families’ freedom. We must make childcare affordable by limiting out-of-pocket expenses, expanding funding for childcare facilities, and providing more financial assistance to families. By lowering the cost of childcare, we can lift families out of poverty, allow mothers to seek paid work outside their homes, and prepare all our children for school. For the families of young children, childcare costs are eating up a large portion of their budgets and preventing them from affording other critical necessities. With more of their budgets freed up, parents will be empowered to save for emergencies, pay monthly utility bills, and purchase toys for their children. Lowering childcare costs will strengthen our economy by adding more women workers to the workforce, providing families with more disposable income, and preparing children better for their futures.
