In the United States today, most workers are still being denied paid family leave by their employers thereby forcing parents to decide between putting food on the table and staying home to care for their children. We can end this tragedy by guaranteeing Americans the freedom to take care of their families without having to struggle to make ends meet. In most American families, women remain primarily responsible for caring for children, managing the household, and preparing meals for dinner. By enacting paid family leave, we can better support women struggling to balance their professional and personal responsibilities. Under the current system, businesses are incentivized to offer their workers as few benefits as possible, but requiring paid family leave will reduce corporations’ motivation to exploit their workers. To protect American workers from exploitation and advance family values, we should require that everyone be provided at least 12 weeks of paid family leave.
