We should immediately reinstate the moratorium on selling and manufacturing semi-automatic assault rifles by repassing the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act. This law must be permanently restored to crack down on the high-capacity weapons flowing into our communities. In addition to restoring this common-sense law, we should be holding firearms manufacturers accountable for intentionally exploiting young men’s insecurities through cynical advertising campaigns. Weapons manufacturers’ callous disregard for human life has contributed greatly to the proliferation of mass casualty events that Americans have become so accustomed to. Most infamously, semi-automatic assault rifles were used to perpetrate the massacres at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, the Route 91 Harvest Concert in Las Vegas, a Century 16 Movie Theater in Aurora, and most recently at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. In all five of these horrific instances, the shooters used AR-15s which are modeled after the United States military’s M-16 rifle.
