Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. voted to pass two bills today to help solve the baby formula shortage crisis nationwide.  The first bill, the Infant Formula Supplemental Appropriations Act (H.R. 7790) allocates $28 million in emergency funding to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to solve the baby formula shortage and prevent it from happening again.  The second bill, the Access to Baby Formula Act (H.R. 7791), provides emergency authority to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to allow WIC beneficiaries to buy a greater variety of baby formulas through the program.

Baby formula is critical to the health and development of infants in my district and across the country,” said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr.  “America was already dealing with supply chain issues that lowered access to baby formula due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  But the recall of formula infected with bacteria caused an even greater crisis for mothers struggling to provide proper nutrition for their babies.  We have to increase investments in the FDA to monitor the production of baby formula and other, critical foods to avoid such recalls and help Americans know that their food supply is safe.”
