Today, the People for Patty Murray Campaign launched a new digital ad, I Chose, featuring five Washington women talking their choices and why Tiffany Smiley, who supports letting politicians ban abortion, is wrong for Washington state.
“I chose my career. I chose where to live. To get married. And if I need an abortion, that should be my choice too,” Washington women say in the energetic spot. “But Tiffany Smiley wants to take away our choice. She supports letting politicians ban abortion nationwide — including here in Washington. No exceptions for rape or incest. She even supported the Texas law, one of the most extreme, that sends doctors to prison. We have to stop Tiffany Smiley. Our rights are on the ballot.”
Tiffany Smiley is an unabashed anti-abortion candidate — she is, in her own words, “100 percent pro-life.” Smiley cheered the decision that overturned Roe and allowed states to ban abortion with no exceptions. Early on in her campaign, Smiley endorsed the Texas abortion ban, which is one of the most extreme in the nation, with no exceptions for rape or incest. Recently, she doubled down on her support for the Texas abortion ban, with a spokesperson clarifying that Smiley’s “position is pro-life, and she respects the decision the state of Texas made” — in other words, Smiley “respects” extreme abortion bans with no exceptions for rape or incest.
In an interview with Northwest Newsradio last week, Smiley refused to say – after being repeatedly asked – whether she supports abortion exceptions for rape and incest. Smiley is campaigning with a wide variety of anti-abortion extremists including Joe Kent and Matt Larkin, and she continues to raise money from and collect endorsements from anti-abortion politicians who are committed to passing a national abortion ban. Her first vote in the U.S. Senate would be to make Mitch McConnell Senate majority leader — and Republicans have already introduced legislation to ban abortion nationwide.
In August, Murray took to the airwaves to underscore the stakes of Washington’s Senate race when it comes to the right to choose. Earlier, in June, Murray launched a spot featuring a Washington state OB-GYN physician as well as a direct-to-camera ad with Senator Murray affirming her commitment to protecting abortion rights for women and patients in Washington. In September, Planned Parenthood Action Fund President Alexis McGill Johnson held a press conference in Seattle with local reproductive rights leaders to denounce Tiffany Smiley’s extreme anti-abortion views.
Murray has led the fight to protect reproductive rights her entire career, which is why the Washington Post called Murray, “the single most effective Democratic combatant against Republican attempts to restrict abortion and otherwise roll back reproductive health-care rights on Capitol Hill.”
