WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) voted to pass the Assault Weapons Ban of 2022.
“In Uvalde 21 people – 19 children – lost their lives to a murderer wielding an assault weapon. In Highland Park, Buffalo, Las Vegas, Parkland, and so many more places around the country, assault weapons were used to kill innocent Americans. Today, we stand up to say we’ve had enough,” said Congressman Kim. “We are facing an epidemic of gun violence and no part of America is immune to tragedy. The weapon of choice for mass murderers is so powerful that hundreds of armed law enforcement officers in Uvalde delayed confronting a single gunman armed with hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Responsible gun owners, hunters, and collectors have many other options available to them. This step will not alone stop gun violence in our nation, nor will it stop all mass murders. But we can and must try and stop people who want to do harm from being able to inflict the full measure of tragedy upon innocent communities and push our nation in a more peaceful and safe direction.”
The Assault Weapons Ban of 2022 would ban the sale and possession of high-capacity magazines and assault-style weapons and features. This legislation is based on the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban,which was in place for 10 years before it was allowed to lapse in 2004.
Eight of the ten deadliest mass shootings in recent American history involved an assault weapon that would have been banned under the 1994 legislation and would be banned under the Assault Weapons Ban of 2022. The legislation does not confiscate guns from law-abiding, responsible gun owners and allows gun owners to keep covered weapons they currently lawfully own.
