Representatives Debbie Dingell (MI-12) and Fred Upton (MI-06), co-chairs of the Congressional Asthma and Allergy Caucus, introduced a resolution to establish October 2 through October 8 as Latex Allergy Awareness Week.
“Widespread exposure to products containing latex in homes, stores, schools, workplaces, and healthcare settings have caused incidences of latex allergies to rise. Exposure to latex can be life-threatening for individuals living with a latex allergy, and it is critical Americans understand these risks,” said Dingell. “With this resolution, we can encourage individuals to remain mindful of the products they are using to keep their loved ones living with a latex allergy healthy and safe.”
“Despite the fact latex allergies can be fatal, awareness of latex allergies does not match its level of risk,” Upton said. “Latex can be found in just about any environment, so raising awareness for those who must deal with this challenge is critical. When people know to look out for products containing latex, they can better help protect family, friends and loved ones from potential harm. Raising awareness also helps those who may have experienced a reaction, but not be familiar with latex allergies, know what steps to take to get help and reduce their risks.”

Patients, families and schools must stay vigilant in reducing or eliminating exposure to latex. Always read product labels to check for latex and find alternatives if possible.
