Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar ( FL-27 ) on Tuesday issued the following statement after she was selected to serve on the House Foreign Affairs Committee:

“ My community is home to thousands of men and women who fled tyranny and oppression. For over 30 years, I dedicated my career in journalism to covering the brutality, cruelty, and inhumanity of the socialist dictatorships that have destroyed so many nations throughout the world. As the daughter of exiles who fled the evil Castro regime, it is the honor of a lifetime to serve on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and fight for our American values of freedom, democracy, and respect for Human Rights, ” said Congresswoman Salazar.

“ South Floridians truly understand the value of freedom and democracy. I will fight fearlessly to stand-up to the brutal regimes in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our allies like Israel, Colombia, and Taiwan. ”

“ I am pleased to welcome Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar to the House Foreign Affairs Committee, ” stated House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul. “ Maria has great experience in foreign policy, including her Emmy Award-winning career in journalism where she went toe-to-toe with Latin-America’s most ruthless tyrants. She will be an important voice on our committee, and I look forward to working closely with her to advance U.S. interests around the world. ”

Congresswoman Salazar represents Florida’s beautiful 27th Congressional District, which includes most of the City of Miami, its suburbs, and the beaches. Her predecessor, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen was not only the first Cuban-American and first Latina, of any background, to ever serve in Congress; but, also the first woman to ever lead the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
