National Republicans are on defense in Iowa. New spending reports show that the National Republican Senatorial Committee is spending their precious dollars on TV ads in Iowa, in an effort to bail out Senator Chuck Grassley as his reelection campaign flounders.
The seven-term incumbent is struggling to gain traction with voters, especially women who make up 53% of the electorate in Iowa. Senator Grassley has repeatedly voted against the Violence Against Women Act, against ensuring equal pay for equal work, and has spent decades working to ban abortion nationwide, even in cases of rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is at risk. In short: Grassley has a woman problem.
For weeks, Grassley has launched divisive and out-of-context attack ads against Admiral Franken, even trying to push false accusations against him, and now they’re calling in national allies in a desperate attempt to slow Franken’s momentum.
In response to the news about the new NRSC TV reservations in Iowa, Franken for Iowa Communications Director C.J. Petersen released the following statement:
“Iowa is on the front line of the Senate battleground, and Admiral Mike Franken is in a position to defeat Chuck Grassley. Don’t take it from me. Take it from Mitch McConnell, Rick Scott, and the national Republicans that are dumping precious resources from the cash-strapped NRSC to bail out Grassley.
“For weeks, Grassley has been attacking Admiral Mike Franken with divisive and out-of-context TV commercials, but their campaign hasn’t made a dent. In fact, the race in Iowa has only gotten more competitive, with recent polling showing the race in a near statistical tie.
“Now Grassley is doubling down on his desperation, calling in air support from Washington politician buddies. National Republicans are seeing what we’re seeing: this is the most competitive reelection fight of Senator Grassley’s career, and Admiral Franken is in a position to win.”
Background:
- The NRSC is well known to be cash-strapped this cycle, so the spending in Iowa signals serious concern about Senator Grassley’s prospects.
- The NRSC recently pulled TV reservations in Arizona, and are now spending in Iowa. National Republicans clearly see a changing Senate map, and a map where Admiral Franken poses a real threat to Chuck Grassley.
