Our democracy is in danger. We must immediately pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Enhancement Act and the For the People Act to safeguard our elections and protect our rights to vote, Overturn Citizens United, and end partisan gerrymandering.
Securing Democracy and Protecting Voting Rights
Beginning with her work as an advocate and philanthropist, Donna was co-chair of the Funders’ Committee on Civic Participation supporting civic participation and voting rights organizations in the passage of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 and the reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act. We must make voting more accessible—by expanding access to vote by mail, making Election Day a holiday, restoring voting rights to returning citizens, providing the resources that states and localities need to conduct fair elections, and otherwise removing barriers to voting.
Trump-led Republicans know that history is not on their side and they’ve lost the majority of Americans forever. That’s why they are actively attacking our right to vote – especially the rights of Black and brown Americans – in unprecedented fashion right now all over the country. We must immediately pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Enhancement Act and the For the People Act to secure and protect our rights to vote and to bring about the reforms to the campaign finance system that will end the special interest chokehold on our elections, politics, and policy. If it’s not done this year by this Congress, Donna will redouble her long-time commitment by making these vital pieces of legislation her top focus the moment she is sworn in.
