U.S. Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) today voted to pass the Right to Contraception Act. The bill would ensure a statutory right for Americans to access birth control.
“Deciding if and when to start a family is a deeply personal decision,” said Congressman Norcross. “The right to access and use contraception is a key part of that. I’ll keep fighting for the freedom of women to make their own healthcare decisions, and that includes access to contraception no matter where you live.”
The passage of the Right to Contraception Act follows in the footsteps of two other reproductive health bills House Democrats passed last week: the Women’s Health Protection Act and the Ensuring Women’s Rights to Reproductive Freedom Act.
The Right to Contraception Act would:
- Create a statutory right for people to obtain contraceptives and use contraception.
- Establish a corresponding right for healthcare providers to provide contraceptives and information related to contraception.
- Allow the Department of Justice, as well as providers and individuals harmed by restrictions on contraception access made unlawful under the legislation, to go to court to enforce these rights.
- Protect a range of contraceptive methods, devices, and medications used to prevent pregnancy, including but not limited to oral contraceptives, emergency contraceptives, and intrauterine devices (IUDs).
