The rapid expansion of the U.S. inmate population, especially during the ‘War on Drugs’ campaigns of the Regan years, resulted in political influence and economic profits for the various businesses supplying goods and services to the U.S. justice system. Along with the Rutherford Institute and the ACLU, I believe that the financial incentive has transformed the criminal justice system into a profit-motivated sector rather than one of reform and punishment.
