Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is pressing the FBI on its predicate for conducting and “assessment” of the non-profit Concerned Women for America (CWA).
“Based on the unredacted information that’s been made public to-date, I’m concerned about the basis upon which the FBI initiated an assessment of CWA and the authorities it relied on to do so,” Grassley wrote. “Unfortunately, as the country has witnessed in the recent past, including the Crossfire Hurricane investigation and the Larry Nassar investigation, the FBI has repeatedly failed in its mission and abused its authority. The federal government wields immense surveillance ability and Congress, especially this committee, has an obligation to ensure that it is used properly and in accordance with all laws and regulations.”
The “assessment” was revealed in documents released under the Freedom of Information Act, but provide a limited insight into the FBI’s actions because of redactions. Grassley is seeking an unredacted copy of the record as well as related records including FBI 302 memoranda. The senators also requests information about the number and type of similar “assessments” conducted since January 2016.
