Today, Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) released the following statement following confirmation that a reported draft Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade is genuine:
"Abortion remains safe and legal right now. This is only a draft opinion, but when issued, this Supreme Court decision would directly endanger the reproductive health, freedom, and safety of Granite State women and families. Despite nearly 50 years of precedent and overwhelming public support for abortion, it's clear we can no longer count on the Court to protect the right to choose. I fought to pass the Women's Health Protection Act in the House to ensure no judge or politician can take away a person's right to make their own health care decisions. It's critical that we swiftly pass it into law to protect these fundamental rights."
"We also must take seriously the signals this draft sends for other rights rooted in privacy. Marriage equality is the law of the land, and overturning Obergefell as well as Roe would take us dangerously backwards. We must continue fighting to pass the Equality Act to ensure LGBTQ+ Americans cannot be discriminated against under the law."
Background:
In September 2021, Pappas, a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, helped pass the Women's Health Protection Act, which codifies the constitutional right to abortion care as found in Roe and reaffirmed in many subsequent decisions for nearly half a century. Pappas is an original cosponsor of this legislation.
Also in September 2021, Pappas joined a bicameral amicus brief in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, urging the Supreme Court to uphold nearly 50 years of precedent in Roe v. Wade and protect the constitutional right to abortion care.
In February 2021, Pappas helped pass the Equality Act, which would explicitly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Pappas is a co-chair of the House Equality Caucus, and an original co-sponsor of this legislation.
