Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) released the following statement after the Supreme Court handed down its decision in West Virginia v. EPA, stating that the Environmental Protection Agency does not have broad authority under the Clean Air Act to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from power plants contributing to climate change:
"Today the radical majority on the Supreme Court seriously undermined our nation's ability to take meaningful steps to combat the climate crisis," said Congressman Pappas. "Power plants are the second-largest source of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in the country, and it is vital that we have every tool available to limit emissions and hold polluters accountable for damaging our communities and our planet. Extreme weather events caused by climate change have cost New Hampshire alone over $500 million in damages over the last ten years, and we know those numbers will continue to grow exponentially if we do not take action. I remain committed to protecting New Hampshire's environment and working to address the existential threat of climate change."
